Save humpback whales around Greenland / Help bultrug walvissen bij Groenland

Greenland is planning to make a request to the International Whaling Commission (IWC) to kill 10 humpback whales a year, starting in 2010. The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society  (WDCS) believes that the proposed hunt is unjustified and should be opposed by member governments of the IWC.

Greenland will request this new quota under the IWC’s category of ‘Aboriginal Subsistence Whaling’ – non-commercial hunts intended to meet the cultural and subsistence needs of indigenous people who have a longstanding reliance on whale products. But Greenland’s hunters do not need to kill more whales for their subsistence – they actually have a surplus, and sell whole whales from their current quota of 212 minke and 19 fin whales a year to corporate wholesalers that sell frozen and vacuum-packed whale meat and blubber through supermarkets all over Greenland, including to visitors and tourists.

On top of the whale hunts, Greenland’s hunters kill another 4,000 dolphins, porpoises and small whales every year, but not a single gram of meat from these animals is taken into account by the IWC when it evaluates whether Greenland’s needs are being met by its existing whaling quota, or if it needs more whales.

WDCS believes this is wrong. In the long term we are demanding a reform of Aboriginal Subsistence Whaling to prevent these kinds of abuses. Right now we need your help to call on members of the European Union to vote against Greenland’s request to kill humpback whales at the IWC’s meeting this June.

Please send a protest email to European Countries that are members of the IWC urging them vote against this unnecessary and unjustified hunt.

Groenland dient bij het IWC een verzoek in voor de jacht op 10 bultrug walvissen vanaf 2010. De Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society  (WDCS) is van mening dat deze jacht onterecht is en niet moet worden toegestaan.

Groenland vraagt dit aan met als argument dat de oorspronkelijke bewoners recht hebben op het vangen van voldoende voedsel en dat deze jacht dus geen commerciële basis heeft. Echter de Groenlandse bevolking heeft deze jacht niet nodig voor hun voortbestaan. Bovendien hebben ze al 212 dwergvinvis walvissen en 12 vinvis walvissen in 2009 gevangen. Een groot deel van deze vangst is door verkocht aan de groothandel en wordt verkocht aan iedereen inclusief toeristen.

Naast de walvisjacht hebben de jagers ook nog 4000 dolfijnen gevangen. Dit terwijl deze vangst niet wordt meegenomen in de beslissing rondom de jacht op de bultrug walvis.

Het WDCS is van mening dat de aanvraag onterecht is. Ze vragen daarom aan de leden van de Europese Unie om tegen deze vangst te stemmen.

Sailors respects Whale sanctuary / Zeilers respecteren Walvisreservaat

The sailors of the Volvo Ocean Race respect the Whale sanctuary nearby Cape Cod. Because the Sailboats have so much speed there is the risk of collision is possible. Officially this kind of boats are allowed to sail there but have to limit the speed till 10 knots. But the organisation of the race said that marine life protection is important. They didn’t want to take risk and decided to sail around the sanctuary.  Thanks on behalf of the Right Whale!

De zeilers van de Volvo Ocean Race respecteren de rust in het walvisreservaat nabij Cape Cod. Omdat de zeilboten zo snel varen is er het gevaar dat deze in botsing komen met de walvissen. Officieel mogen deze boten wel door het gebied varen, echter met een maximale snelheid van 10 knopen. Maar de organisatie van de race is van mening dat bescherming van de walvissen belangrijk is. Irrawaddy dolphin / Irrawaddy dolfijn

This dolphin lives in the tropical oceans of south-east Asia. The life mostly close to the beach. Also there are population who lives in big rivers like: Ganges, Mekong, Irrawaddy and Mahakam. The populations living in several rivers are decreasing because the will be caught in fishermen nets.
Now fortunately, at Bangladesh, researcher discover a group of about 6000 animals. This is good news for the worldwide population of this animal which is marked as vulnerable on the Union of Conservation Red list.
But this amount don’t mean that this species in not longer endangered. On many places there are many treats like closing the rivers, pollution and side caught in fishery.

Deze dolfijn leeft in de tropische oceanen van zuid-oost Azie. Ze leven meestal dicht bij de kust. Ook zijn er populaties die leven in grote riveren als: Ganges, Mekong, Irrawaddy en Mahakam. De populaties die leven in de rivieren zijn sterk bedreigd door o.a. verdrinking in visnetten.
Nu is er gelukkig nabij Bangladesh een groep van 6000 dieren ontdekt door onderzoekers. Dit is goed nieuws voor een soort die inmiddels op de lijst van bedreigde dieren staat van de Union of Conservation.
Maar de ontdekking van deze populatie wil niet zeggen dat deze soort niet meer bedreigd wordt. Op veel plaatsen zijn er vele bedreigingen als het plaatsen van dammen, vervuiling en verdrinking in netten.

Ik heb dat nooit gezien totdat ik een internetsite bezocht van het Project: Optus Whale Song.  Einddoel van dit project is een TV reclame over communicatie (van de telefoon provider van Australie). De interactieve internetsite is heel bijzonder. Kijk en geniet van de geluiden en beelden. New research group / Nieuwe onderzoeks groep

At March 23th in Australia the world first international workshop on non-lethal whale research started. About 13 countries, initiated by Australia installed the Southern Ocean Research Partnership. They want to start a big research on whales in this region. New techniques like satellite tagging, aerial surveying and genetic science will be used instead of killing whales.

Australian government start with a fund of A$500.000,- to start. This is an example of good developments. This group will participate the next IWC meeting this summer and will influence that the IWC will become more science and conservation focused instead of political focused.

In contradiction of other opinions, Dr. Nick Gales, leader of the Australian Marine Mammal Centre already conclude after recent study that the population of Mink whale decline.

The most important issue on the next IWC meeting for this group is to agree about a five-years research plan. For detail reading see article.

Op 23 maart is in Australië de eerste internationale workshop over niet-dodelijke walvis onderzoek gestart. Circa 13 landen,  met als initiatiefnemer Australië hebben een onderzoeksgroep geïnstalleerd die zich richt op de Zuidelijke Oceaan. Ze willen beginnen met een groot onderzoek naar walvissen in deze regio. Nieuwe technieken zoals satelliet-tagging, luchtfotografie en genetische wetenschap zal worden gebruikt in plaats van het doden van walvissen.
Australische overheid heeft als start een fonds van A $ 500.000, – opgezet. Dit is een voorbeeld van goede ontwikkelingen. Deze groep zal deze zomer aan de komende IWC bijeenkomst deelnemen en zal proberen te bereiken dat de IWC meer wetenschap en instandhouding gericht zal worden in plaats van politiek gericht.
In tegenstelling van andere meningen, heeft Dr Nick Gales, leider van de Australische Marine Mammal Centrum reeds kunnen concluderen na recente studie dat de populatie  van de Vinvis daalt.
Het belangrijkste onderwerp op de komende IWC bijeenkomst voor deze groep is om overeenstemming te bereiken over een vijf jaar durend onderzoek plan.

IWC shift to politic compromise / IWC verschuift naar politiek compromis

The International Whaling Commission (IWC) move from scientific based whale hunting into political compromise. For several years the IWC used scientific procedure to make sure that all catch of whale were limited within sustainable limits. Now after a meeting in Rome the commission agreed to leave this way and to install small working groups. Those groups has to make a package deal of proposals for a restart of commercial whaling. Then the groups are able to make agreements of amount of catching whales during 5 years! They believe that due to this systems the amounts of whale catching will be limited because then Japan will lower the amount of scientific catching because they were allowed to catch an amount of whale commercially. In the past five years, Japan catch about 5000 whales and there is no change that due to this new system they will decrease this amount.  Another dangerous shift in acting is that the IWC also made no objection to the Iceland and Norway whale catching nor the recent resumption of the international trade in whale meat. In June the complete IWC will meet in Madeira. I hope that above ideas will not have the agreement of all 84 nations because this is a disaster for the future of the endangered whales.

The internationale walviscommissie (IWC) is van een wetenschappelijke beleid overgestapt op een politiek beleid. Vele jaren gebruikte de IWC wetenschappelijk onderbouwde argumenten om de walvisvangst te beperken tot aanvaardbare aantallen die het voorbestaan niet bedreigde. Echter na een bijeenkomst in Rome is besloten om dit beleid te veranderen en een aantal werkgroepen in te stellen. Deze groepen moeten komen tot een deal om de commerciële walvisvangst te hervatten waarbij er per 5 jaar een vangstquotum wordt vastgesteld zonder dat bekend is of dit verantwoord is. Men hoopt op die manier dat Japan stopt met zijn “wetenschappelijke”walvisvangst en genoegen neemt met het opgelegde quotum. In de afgelopen 5 jaar ving Japan ongeveer 5000 walvissen en er is geen vertrouwen in het feit dat Japen nu minder gaat vangen. Een andere gevaarlijke verandering in beleid is dat de IWC geen bezwaar heeft gemaakt tegen de walvisvangst door IJsland en Noorwegen. Ook treden ze niet op tegen de hervatting van de internationale walvisvlees handel. In juni is de totale commissie van 84 landen bijeen in Madera. I hoop dat bovengenoemde ideeën niet worden aangenomen want dat zou een ramp zijn voor de toekomst van de bedreigde walvissen.

Ocean noise threat Whales? / Oceaan geluiden bedreigen walvissen?

The evolution of the whales took several million of years. Only the last hundred year man-made noise is produced in progressive amounts. Shipping, Offshore, military sonar and underwater explosives are sources of noise pollution in all oceans.

There are many people how believe that noises sometimes are the course of death of whales.  Mostly not directly but due to noises, whales have troubles to find there partners and it can be the reason that whales become desorientated and causes whale strandings.

Problem is that only a little is known about the acoustic systems of whales. We only know that different whale species produce different kind of sounds. Because there is not much governmental interest in this issue, a private initiative lead to the project Sons de Mar. Researchers try to find out the acoustic system of whales and the influence of man-made noise to these animals. I advise everyone to visit the site of Sons de Mar. Have a look on the page:  Sons du Mar and click on the different species but also on the human related noise sources. You will be frightened of the impact of some sounds!

De evolutie van de walvissen heeft enkele miljoenen jaren geduurd. Sinds de laatste honderd jaar  veroorzaakt de mens steeds meer lawaai. Scheepvaart, offshore-industrie, militaire sonar en onderwater explosies zijn bronnen van geluidsoverlast in alle oceanen.

Er zijn veel mensen die van mening zijn dat geluiden soms de oorzaak zijn van de dood van walvissen. Meestal indirect, door geluiden hebben walvissen problemen met het vinden van partners en het kan ook de reden zijn dat walvissen gedesoriënteerd raken en stranden op de kust.

Probleem is dat slechts weinig bekend is over de akoestische systemen van walvissen. We weten alleen dat  verschillende soorten walvissen verschillende soorten geluiden produceren. Omdat er niet veel overheid belang is in deze kwestie, is op  particulier initiatief een project genaamd: Sons de Mar gestart. Onderzoekers proberen uit te vinden hoe  de akoestische systeem van walvissen werken en wat de invloed van door de mens veroorzaakte geluidsoverlast op deze dieren is. Ik adviseer iedereen om naar de site van Sons de Mar te gaan. Ga naar de pagina: Sons du Mar en klik op de verschillende soorten, maar ook op het door de mens gemaakte  geluidsbronnen. Je wordt gewoon bang van de sterkte van sommige geluiden!

The Eskimo Whale Hunt / Walvisjacht bij de Eskimo’s

Johanthan Harris and Andrew Moore made an unique photo project concerning the Whale hunt of the original inhabitants of Alaska the Inupiat Eskimo. They already hunt for thousand of years on the Bowhead Whale.

For there annual food supply they hunt on this animals. Due to international laws, now they are limited till 22 whales a year. This hunt is not harmfull for the population of this whale due to the low amount they hunt. Arboriginal hunting cannot be compared with commercial whaling which is dangerous for endangered species due to the speed and volume of the hunting.

I advise visitors to have a look to this special project. Besides the beautiful pictures of the landscape and people it gives a good feeling how this original inhabitants live. Also the project is very special due to the technical impact of the slide show.

Johanthan Harris en Andrew Moore ontwikkelden een bijzonder foto project met als onderwerp de walvis vangst van de oorspronkelijke bewonders van Alaska, de Inupiat Eskimo. Zij jagen als meer dan duizend jaar op de Groenlandse Walvis.

Voor hun jaarlijkse voedselvoorziening jagen ze op deze dieren. Vanwege de vangstbeperking is het aantal walvissen dat ze per jaar mogen jagen beperkt tot 22 stuks. Deze jacht is niet van invloed op de populatie van deze walvis doordat ze slechts een gering aantal dieren doden. De autentieke jacht van “oervolken” kun je niet vergelijken met de commerciele walvisvaart die vanwege hun snelheid en omvang wel een gevaar vormen voor walvissen.

Ik adviseer bezoekers om een kijkje te nemen naar dit bijzondere project. Behalve prachtige beelden van het landschap en bevolking geeft het goed de sfeer weer van het leven van dit volk. Daarnaast is dit project ook in technisch opzicht bijzonder.

Stop Iceland’s whale hunt/ Laat Iceland stoppen met de walvisjacht

Through the statistics of my blog I see that the message about the whale sounds is popular.  Several visitors clicks on the download to hear the sounds themselves.

It is therefore very sad to read that the parliament of Iceland in 2009 authorized the capture of 150 fin whale  and 100 minke whale!

Until 2006, Iceland agreed to the moratorium. In 2007 abaut 45 whale were caught.  You can help to stop the hunting. Go to the site of de Whale and Dolphin Conservatory Society and fill in the e-mail petition against this hunting.

Het is heel bijzonder om via geluid “contact” te hebben met deze imposante zee dieren, dit omdat ze nu eenmaal niet dagelijks te zien zijn.

Daarom is het bijzonder droevig om te lezen dat het parlement van IJsland voor 2009 toestemming heeft gegeven voor de vangst van 150 vinvissen en 100 dwergvinvissen!

Kingdom of the blue whale

Is the title of a documantary in which a group of researchers follow the migration of the biggest whale species.  It containes beautiful images of this remarkeble animal. It follows the animals from the coast of California till the equator. During this research they proved that this whale sometimes cross with the normal Fin whale. The reason that this happened is perhaps because the blue whale have difficulties to find a partner. This is because the total population is drop down till about 2000 animals.  In this film, very unique is the pictures of a young blue whale.

Is de titel van een documentaire waarin een groep onderzoekers de trek van deze grootste walvis genaamd blauwe vinvis volgen. Het bevat schitterende beelden van dit bijzondere dier. De film volgt de dieren van de kust van Californie tot aan de evenaar.  De onderzoekers vinden bewijs voor het feit dat deze blauwe vinvis soms paart met de normale vinvis. Dit wordt waarschijnlijk veroorzaakt doordat de blauwe vinvis moeite heeft om een partner te vinden van hetzelfde soort. Dit komt omdat de populatie is gekrompen tot ongeveer 2000 dieren. In deze film zijn ook unieke beelden te zien van een jonge blauwe vinvis (kalf)
